Knee Pain - Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome

PATELLOFEMORAL PAIN SYNDROME (PFP)

  • Do you have knee pain when squatting?

  • Do you feel like your knees are not tracking correctly?

  • Have you recently hit or fallen on your kneecap?

  • Do you have knee pain?

If you answered yes to any of these, have a read about Patellofemoral pain syndrome and see if it is similar to your symptoms.

Patellofemoral pain syndrome (PFP) is a condition whereby there is pain in the front of the knee and around the kneecap. Common causes of this is overuse of the knee joint and trauma to the kneecap.

Symptoms can range with PFP from uncomfortable to very painful but most commonly felt is a dull ache in the front of the knee, either one or both knees and this worsens with activity. Other symptoms can include;

  • Pain when exercising

  • Pain when bending the knee - stairs, jumping, squatting

  • Pain after sitting for long periods of time - working or sitting watching tv

  • Cracking or popping sounds when walking up stairs or after sitting for a long period of time.

Homecare would be to start strengthening the area. A few of exercises you should start with include;

  • VMO activation

  • Glute bridge

  • Clams

A quick test I like to do when people tell me they have frontal knee pain (to help with diagnosing) that you can do at home

  • Wall squat for 45 seconds.

1) Does the knee pain persist? This is another knee pathology.

2) Does the knee pain go away? If this is you, it may be likely you have PFP Syndrome.
